About the band
The Sumter Community Concert Band (SCCB) was founded in 1982. Managed by a board of directors elected from within the membership, SCCB is a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation dependent on membership dues, patron contributions, and grants. The SCCB is partially funded by the South Carolina Arts Commission, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts. SCCB is a member of the Association of Concert Bands.
The band made its debut November 14, 1982 at the "old" Opera House on Main Street in Sumter, and since that time has performed at various locations, such as the Palmetto Park Amphitheater, Sumter High School, Bates Middle School, Swan Lake Iris Gardens, USC Sumter's Nettles-Schwartz Auditorium, Shaw Air Force Base, Bishopville's Opera House, and the newly renovated Opera House in Sumter. The majority of SCCB's concerts are held at Patriot Hall in Sumter, which is the band's home location. Since the band's first season, it has presented four to five concerts each year. All concerts are free and open to the public.
The band welcomes new members and draws musicians from Sumter, Shaw Air Force Base, and surrounding counties with varying backgrounds ---- from teachers, lawyers, farmers, pilots, homemakers, physicians, college students and retirees. Their common link is a love for band music and a desire to share that love with the public. Membership in the SCCB is open to adults with prior band experience who are committed to participate with the band at rehearsals and concerts.
SCCB's season runs from late August to late May. Rehearsals are on Thursday nights from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm at Patriot Hall in the Pat Veltre band room (access door on Mood Avenue). Patriot Hall is located at 135 Haynsworth Street.
